GLP-1 Medications and PCOS: Why Nutrition Still Matters During and After Medication

If you’ve been prescribed a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Saxenda, or Mounjaro for PCOS-related weight gain, you're in the right place to learn more about it from a nutritional perspective.
These drugs can lead to short-term weight loss, and for many women with PCOS who’ve struggled for years, they can feel like a lifeline.
But there’s something many aren’t told: without the right nutrition and hormone support, the long-term results often don’t last. I’ve worked with women who feel frustrated and confused when the weight creeps back, or symptoms return, after stopping the medication.
That’s where the right nutrition, support and sustainable strategy makes all the difference.
What GLP-1s Actually Do
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a gut hormone that affects appetite, insulin response and gastric emptying. They often lead to reduced hunger and slower digestion, which can help with weight loss.
But they don’t address the root causes of PCOS, including:
Inflammation
Hormone imbalances
Poor metabolic flexibility
Poor gut health
And they don’t provide the nutrients, protein, fibre or movement strategies your body needs to preserve metabolism, hormones and long-term results.
Why Women with PCOS Need More Than Medication
1. GLP-1s can reduce appetite, but also reduce protein intake
Many women feel full quickly and unintentionally under eat protein, which is essential for:
Muscle maintenance
Blood sugar control
Supporting metabolism and hormone pathways
This can lead to muscle loss, fatigue, and even worsening insulin sensitivity over time—especially when coming off the medication.
2. You’re not absorbing the same nutrients
Because GLP-1s slow digestion, some women experience bloating, nausea or nutrient absorption issues. That matters when you’re already more prone to nutrient depletions with PCOS, such as magnesium, B12, zinc and omega-3s.
3. They don’t fix insulin resistance
GLP-1s help with blood sugar regulation, but unless you’re also making food and lifestyle changes, the root drivers of PCOS persist. This is often why weight returns or symptoms flare when you stop the drug.
4. You need a plan for after the meds
Without support, coming off GLP-1s can lead to:
Rebound hunger
Blood sugar crashes
Rapid weight regain
Low mood and energy
The Role of Food-First, Hormone-Focused Support
Whether you’re currently using a GLP-1 or planning to stop, nutrition still plays a central role in:
Preserving muscle mass and metabolism
Rebalancing hormones like insulin, oestrogen and androgens
Preventing blood sugar crashes and energy dips
Improving gut health, digestion and inflammation
Creating sustainable, real-life habits you can stick with
What I Focus On Inside the Hormone Shift Method
In my 12-week programme, I work with women with PCOS to support their hormones, metabolism and long-term health, whether they’re on medication or not.
Here's how:
Protein-first meals that protect muscle and curb cravings
Realistic blood sugar balance strategies (no carb cutting or extremes)
Functional testing (e.g. DUTCH, nutrients, microbiome) when needed
Phase-specific hormone support (e.g. ovulation, inflammation, oestrogen clearance)
Weekly guidance and coaching so you're not doing it alone
You won’t be guessing what to eat. And you won’t be relying on willpower alone!
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Medication or Nutrition
GLP-1s can be one tool, but they’re not a solution on their own. Whether you stay on them, taper off, or avoid them entirely, supporting your body’s underlying needs is still essential. Here's a link to the NHS recommendations and information about weight loss injections.
If you’re looking for a practical, evidence-based approach that supports your hormones, not just the number on the scale, I’d love to help.
